Living Abroad Counselling
Gillian Jacobson Integrative Psychotherapist,
I am a fully qualified Integrative Psychotherapist (MSc) with a degree in Sociology and Psychology (BA) and a Certificate in Culture and Heritage.
Originally from South Africa, I have lived abroad for almost 22 years. Having lived in the Middle East and in Europe, I have had first hand experience of some of the challenges that living away from your country of birth and all that's familiar can bring.
The choice to live and work abroad can be due to a variety of professional and personal reasons. It can be both exciting and nerve racking. However, the cultural differences and social demands that expatriates and immigrants experience can effect mental health, and needs to be understood, accepted and supported.
Online and Face-to-Face
My clinical work encompasses two spheres:
1. Life Transitions.
2. Unresolved Childhood Traumas.
Life transitions, such as, moving and living abroad can be particularly challenging and rife with uncertainty. Coupled with lack or limited social support can lead to stress, anxiety and depression, which can cause unhelpful coping behaviours:
These unhelpful coping behaviours then exacerbate pre-existing mental health issues:
Anxiety, Panic, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Anger and Rage issues
Low Self Esteem
Problems which have their root cause in unresolved childhood trauma.
Integrative Psychotherapy can support you to work through challenges related to these areas and find a way forward.
It offers a unique approach in that it not only uncovers and provides insight and understanding, but can give you tools to manage and work through your problems.
If you feel you would like to get in contact to find out more or schedule a session, please do not hesitate to text, call, email or submit the enquiry form below. I look forward to hearing from you!
